The Phú Quốc Ridgeback, also known as the Vietnamese Ridgeback, is a breed of dog that originates from the island of Phú Quốc in Vietnam. This breed is one of only three breeds that have a ridge of hair running down their back in the opposite direction to the rest of their coat, alongside the Thai Ridgeback and the Rhodesian Ridgeback. They are a medium-sized breed with a variety of color patterns ranging from black to tiger stripe. They are noble, primitive hunters and will protect and love their owners. According to the Phu Quoc Ridgeback Kennel Club (PQRKC), dto the distance of the island from the mainland, this breed was isolated and was never crossed with any other breed.
Phú Quốc Ridgebacks are known to be generally healthy dogs, but can suffer from patellar luxation and hip dysplasia. They are susceptible to bloat, also known as gastric dilation volvulus (GDV). This is a life-threatening condition that can come on suddenly, so it’s important to know the warning signs and get an affected dog immediate veterinary care. Genetic testing is recommended, including for the following additional conditions: hyperuricosoria, degenerative myelopathy, and progressive rod-cone degeneration.
Phú Quốc Ridgebacks are known for their agility, intelligence, and independence. They can be wary of strangers but are generally loyal and affectionate with their families. These dogs are high energy and require regular exercise to keep them physically and mentally stimulated. They can be somewhat challenging to train due to their independent nature, but with consistent, positive reinforcement training methods, they can excel in various activities. They have a prey drive so early socialization and obedience training is a must.
The Phú Quốc Ridgeback is an excellent swimmer, and its webbed feet are a unique characteristic not commonly seen in most dog breeds.
These dogs have been known to climb trees, which is a testament to their agility and adaptability.
The Vietnamese consider the Phú Quốc Ridgeback a national treasure, and exporting them was illegal until recent years.
