Breed + Health Cat DNA Test

Once you receive your cat’s DNA kit in the mail, follow the detailed instructions for sample collection and barcode registration inside the box. After collecting your sample, send it back to us in the provided prepaid packaging. We will notify you via email once your sample is received. In the rare cases where a sample processing failure occurs and needs reprocessing, we will contact you regarding the next steps. Every sample helps us create the biggest database of feline genetic data.

Our breed testing is mainly geared towards mixed-breed, non-pedigree and domestic pets to determine the breeds that your pet is most similar to genetically. Please know that we are NOT a breed verification test, so we do not determine pedigree (or purebred) status, and some breeders may mistake our breed test for confirmation of their pet’s pedigree. 

The report we offer allows you to see the breed breakdown within groups (Western, Eastern, Exotic, and Persian), and the likelihood of breed similarity. The list of breeds that we test for can be found here: Basepaws Cat DNA Report: Which Breeds Does It Include?

The majority of the cats in the world are not pedigreed nor do they have an ancestor that’s pedigreed. We must stress that our genomic similarity analysis does not necessarily mean that there was a pedigreed cat in your cat’s ancestry.

Even for breeds included in our database, a pedigree cat may not show up with 100% similarity. This is because our test will compare your cat's genetic sequence to the genetic average of each of the breeds that we test for. Many cat breeds have overlapping genetic sections of their DNA sequences, so our analysis may show more than one breed or breed group due to these overlapping genes. It is NOT meant to confirm pedigree, it is meant to compare your cat's genes with those of known breeds.

Included: Breeds

Basepaws Breed + Health DNA Tests come with free breed updates for life as we add more breeds to our reports, and as we add more pedigree samples to our database. Basepaws currently tests for 21 cat breed types and 4 breed regions. There are over 60 known cat breeds at this time, so we will continue to research more pedigree cats to increase the number of breeds included in the results over time.

This means that our reports are living documents! They will update with each new breed addition over time as we continue researching and developing. These will be added to your report at no additional cost, and we will notify every cat parent by email when their cat's report has been updated with new breeds.

Please keep in mind that only Whole Genome Sequencing customers will continue to receive health marker updates to their cats' reports. 

Yes. For all orders in the continental U.S., a pre-paid return shipping label is included in every kit. Simply register your kit, swab your cat, and send it back to us.

Yes! We charge $15 for International shipping (return shipping NOT included).
