Majorca Mastiff
The Ca de Bou, also known as the Perro de Presa Mallorquin, Majorca Mastiff, and Majorca Shepherd Dog, is a breed of dog that originated in Spain, specifically on the island of Mallorca. The Ca de Bou descends from the old ""Bulldog,"" a term that was used until the 19th century to refer to a robust dog with a pugnacious aspect. During English control of Mallorca, this British breed was crossbred with local dogs to eventually create the Ca de Bou breed. The breed was mostly used as a cattle dog, but also participated in dog fighting until it was outlawed. Although less popular than some breeds, efforts have been made to preserve the Ca de Bou, especially in its native Spain.

Genetic Predispositions and Health
Majorca Mastiffs are known to be generally healthy dogs, but as a larger breed they are at risk for developing orthopedic problems, such as hip and elbow dysplasia. Genetic testing is recommended, including for the following specific conditions: hyperuricosoria, degenerative myelopathy, canine multifocal retinopathy 1, and progressive rod-cone degeneration. As a deep-chested breed, they are susceptible to bloat, also known as gastric dilation volvulus (GDV). This is a life-threatening condition that can come on suddenly, so it’s important to know the warning signs and get an affected dog immediate veterinary care.
Personality and Behavior
Ca de Bous are known for being fearless and protective, making them excellent guard dogs. Despite their protective nature, they are very affectionate towards their family and have a calm demeanor around the home. They are not generally aggressive without cause and can be socialized to get along well with other animals and strangers. They are intelligent dogs that respond well to training, but they do require a firm hand due to their strong-willed nature.
Fun Facts
The name Ca de Bou translates as "Bulldog" in the native Catalan language, referring to their historic ties to the old Bulldog breeds.
Despite their imposing appearance, Ca de Bous are known to be quite gentle and loving with children in their family.
This breed is a proficient swimmer, which is not common among many Mastiff types.
The Majorca Mastiff was recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) on July 1, 2006.
