The Ibizan Hound, also known as Podenco Ibicenco, is an ancient breed that originated on the Spanish island of Ibiza. This breed's history can be traced back over 5,000 years to ancient Egypt, where similar hounds were depicted in hieroglyphics. These elegant and swift dogs were brought to the Balearic Islands by the Phoenicians and were used for hunting rabbits and other small game. They are known for their excellent hunting skills and exceptional speed.

Genetic Predispositions and Health
Ibizan Hounds can suffer from hip dysplasia, autoimmune thyroiditis, seizures, allergies, congenital deafness, eye disorders including retinal dysplasia, and cataracts. They cannot tolerate barbiturate anesthesia, so this should be discussed before any planned surgery.
Personality and Behavior
Ibizan Hounds are known for their intelligence, independence, and keen hunting instincts. They are affectionate and loyal to their families, but can be reserved around strangers. Due to their strong prey drive, they may not be the best fit for households with small pets, as they may see them as potential prey. They are generally good with children and get along well with other dogs if properly socialized. The Ibizan Hound's history as a breed dates to around 3400 B.C.
It is said that a life-size statue of Anubis, known as the "Watchdog of the Dead", was found in the tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt in 1922. The statue is identical to the Ibizan Hound of today.
